Love That Goes Lower

I've been reading about the story of Corrie ten Boom this week.

She was fifty-one, living above the family watch shop in Haarlem, in Nazi-occupied Holland.

From 1942, she and her father and sister hid Jewish men and women in a room built into the back of her bedroom, barely wider than a person, reached through a sliding panel low in the wall.

In February 1944, someone informed on them. The Gestapo took the house apart and never found the room. The six people inside it lived.

Corrie's father died in prison ten days later. Corrie and Betsie were sent to Ravensbrück, where Betsie died that December.

Corrie survived. And she came out of that camp carrying this sentence: There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still.

If anyone had reason to believe they'd fallen beyond God's reach, that he had somehow forgotten them, it was her.

And yet, in that place of unimaginable suffering, she didn't just say it. She found it to be true.

We all have pits. Maybe yours is depression. Maybe it's shame from mistakes you can't undo. Maybe it's grief that's swallowed you whole or addiction that's pulled you under.

Maybe it's just the crushing weight of a life that didn't turn out the way you planned.

It's in those moments that the enemy whispers the cruelest lies. That you've gone too far. You've fallen too deep. God can't reach you here.

But Psalm 139:8 says, "If I ascend up into heaven, You are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there!"

Sheol was the lowest place the writer had a word for. The bottom of everything.

And even there, God isn't arriving. He's already present.

Jesus went to the grave, the ultimate pit, and conquered it.

He didn't stay at a safe distance and lower a rope. He climbed down into death itself to prove that His love reaches all the way to the bottom.

Today, wherever you are, however deep the pit feels, know that God's love is deeper.

Not just big enough to reach you, but already there with you. You haven't fallen beyond His grasp. You cannot sink lower than His love will go.

And He is able, and He will lift you out.

Prayer

Lord, there is no pit so deep that Your love is not deeper still, reaching into the lowest places, finding me in the darkest depths, going further down than I've fallen.

I've been in deep pits, places I thought were too far down for anyone to reach, convinced I'd sunk beyond help, beyond hope, beyond even Your ability to find me.

Teach me that Your love has no bottom, no limit to how far it will go, no depth it refuses to descend to rescue someone You love.

Corrie ten Boom discovered this truth in unimaginable darkness, proving that even the deepest horrors humans create cannot go deeper than Your love reaches.

Help me believe this for my own pits, the ones I've fallen into, the ones I'm in right now, the ones I fear falling into, knowing Your love reaches every one.

Remind me that deep pits don't intimidate You, that You descended to the lowest places to prove nothing is beneath Your love, that down is not away from You.

Give me hope in the pit I'm in, comfort knowing Your love has already reached this depth, peace in the darkness because Your love is here with me.

Let me rest today knowing there is no pit so deep that Your love is not deeper still, held in the lowest places by love that goes lower.
