God Will Make a Way Where There Seems to Be No Way.

On the way to school this morning, Theo and I passed a dumpster that had been tipped over. Not a small one. The kind that takes a truck to move, lying on its side with trash spilling out across the pavement.

I said something about how hard that was going to be to lift back up.

Theo replied, "God could."

He's been asking about how big God is again recently.

Is God bigger than that building? Bigger than a plane? Bigger than the sea?

Every answer is yes, and every yes just sends him looking for something bigger to check.

So the rest of the walk we got talking about how strong God is instead.

Strong enough to lift the whole world, I told him.

He thought about it for a second. Then he said, "But He's not stronger than electromagnets, is He?"

I'm not sure he even knows what an electromagnet is!

Trying not to laugh, I replied: "He's even stronger than electromagnets."

But he wasn't joking. He had just agreed that God could pick up the entire planet, and then he wanted to check on a magnet.

And I do the same with so many things in my life.

I believe God made the earth. Every star and galaxy in the sky. I believe He split a sea in half so a whole nation could walk through on dry ground. That He died and rose again.

And then I look at the thing in front of me and think, but not that one...

The Israelites did this too. They had just watched Egypt come apart. Ten plagues. The most powerful empire in the world pried open.

Then they reached the edge of the water with an army behind them, and they panicked.

They had seen God do the enormous thing. They just couldn't believe He would do this specific thing.

And Moses said, "Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today."

What Moses asked of them wasn't to predict what God would do. It was to stop deciding in advance that He couldn't.

And God made a way. Just not the one they would have chosen.

He didn't send the Egyptians home. He didn't dry the sea into a field. He put a road through the middle of the thing they were most frightened of and asked them to walk into it.

So today, whatever Red Sea you have in front of you, know that God will make a way.

We can never know in advance what it looks like, and it probably isn't the one we'd imagined.

But He always opens doors and makes a way.
