Scripture
Psalm 23:4·WEB Translation
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Devotional
In The Valley
I think we've all been touched by cancer in some way, either ourselves, or a loved one, a friend, a colleague. Maybe it's a different diagnosis, a chronic illness, a sudden health crisis. But most of us know that moment when the valley of the shadow of death stops being a poetic phrase and becomes the room you're sitting in, the diagnosis you just heard, or watching someone you love face a reality you can't fix.
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me." That's Psalm 23:4. It's one of the most quoted verses in Scripture. But when you're actually in the valley, when the threat is real, when you're facing difficult treatments or watching someone you love face them, those words become less comforting poetry and more desperate declaration.
The psalmist (most likely King David) doesn't say "there is no valley" or "nothing bad will happen." He says "I will fear no evil." The threat is real. The darkness is real. But fear doesn't have to be the response. Not because you're strong enough to handle it, but because "You are with me."
Those five words change everything. God's presence doesn't eliminate the valley, but it transforms walking through it. You're not alone in the hospital room. You're not alone in the uncertainty. You're not alone in the fear that rises at 3am. God is with you.
Today, whatever valley you're in, speak this truth over yourself: God is with me. Therefore, I will not fear.

Prayer
Lord, I will fear no evil, for You are with me - a declaration that transforms how I face darkness, danger, threats, knowing Your presence makes fear unnecessary.
Evil exists, real threats surround me, genuine dangers lurk, but I will not fear them because You're here, and Your presence changes everything about what I'm facing.
Teach me that refusing to fear evil isn't denying evil exists but trusting that You're greater, that what threatens me is smaller than the God who stands with me.
For You are with me - those five words are the reason courage is possible, why fear doesn't have to win, why I can walk through valleys without being consumed by terror.
Help me remember Your presence when fear whispers, when evil feels close, when darkness surrounds, to speak this truth over myself: You are with me, therefore I will not fear.
Remind me that Your presence doesn't eliminate evil but makes me unafraid of it, that walking through darkness with You is safer than walking through light alone.
Give me courage that comes from Your nearness, peace that flows from Your companionship, confidence that rests on the truth that I'm never facing evil by myself.
Let me walk today without fearing evil because You are with me, bold in Your presence, brave because of Your companionship, fearless because You're here.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
